TOOLS OF REDACTION: CODE
This work investigates the arc of western humanity by offering new paradigms chronicling Black women within its historical narratives. It is my argument that the past and current received mythologies of Western civilization are revisionist history.
Utilizing mixed media, popular reference, taxonomic, diagnostic and religious text as source material and traditional and experimental tools of redaction and erasure, I engage viewers in visual discourse that reinserts Black women into the fundamental lexical blocks that build American narratives of creation and morality, while maintaining the integrity of the source (in situ).
My work theorizes and codifies radicalized understandings of identity, acknowledging the complexities of the oppressive heritage of Western civilization, while celebrating Black women as a fundamental building block/source of civilization.
